Job Description

The Field Mechanic is responsible for maintaining and servicing heavy equipment. Primarily cranes of various types and sizes, along with other equipment such as excavators, bulldozers, etc. This position works primarily on construction job sites and travels to locations on a regular basis.

 DUTIES AND  RESPONSIBILITIES                                                                                                                                                         
·         Troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of cranes, heavy equipment, vehicles, and other construction equipment

·         Assist with crane moves and reconfigurations. Perform the duties of an A/D Director if qualified.

·         Diagnose, repair, adjust, and modify components as needed

·         Troubleshoot mechanical issues quickly and efficiently, with analytical ability to find solutions to difficult technical problems

·         Reads, understands, and interprets operating manuals, blueprints, and technical drawings

·         Effectively uses diagnostic equipment to assist with troubleshooting and repairs

·         Positive interface with project superintendents, shop supervisors, and field support personnel

·         Prepares proper documentation of work manually and electronically

·         Maintains conformity to safety requirements and other regulations

·         Works in the field, traveling to various job sites and locations

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS                                                                                                                                                                     

  Education/Experience

o      High School Diploma or equivalent

o      Formal mechanical training, apprenticeship, or certification program

o      2+ years of mechanical experience

o      2+ years crane maintenance experience

o      CCO certification a plus

 Requirements/Competencies

o      Basic computer knowledge

o      Become proficient in equipment manufacturer software

o      Microsoft Office

o      Proactive, self-motivated, problem solver

o      Ability to work independently, as well as on teams

o      Must have a strong diesel engine, hydraulic, and electrical background

o      Must have existing (or purchase own) hand tools

o      CDL license a plus

o      Ability and willingness to travel

o      Must currently be in or willing to join IUOE Local 18

POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK

This is a full-time position, and the work week for employees is normally considered 40 hours Monday through Friday. Flexibility is required to support time-sensitive issues as they arise. However, greater emphasis is placed on meeting the responsibilities assigned to this position.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work conditions are primarily outdoors under all weather conditions.  Most of the work schedule will include travel to and could include working at various field locations as required.  Overnight stays can be expected depending on the project.  The administrative work is performed in a non-smoking office or field office environment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS                                                                                                                                                             

The physical requirements must be met by an employee, with or without reasonable accommodation, to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  

Employees must have the ability to: 

·         Sit (or stand) for prolonged periods of time   

·         Occasionally lift up to 50 pounds

·         Occasionally bend, twist, squat, and kneel 

·         Occasionally walk up and down the stairs

·         Demonstrate visual acuity with or without corrected vision

·         Demonstrate hearing acuity with or without corrected hearing

·         Must be able to walk outdoor construction sites with uneven terrain and obstacles

·         Must be able to work in a variety of weather conditions
