Drake Controls is currently looking for a Hydraulic Governor Technician. Hydraulic Governors are mechanical devices that control the speed of a prime mover (i.e. Steam Turbine or Large Marine Diesel Engine) We understand many individuals have probably never seen or know what a hydraulic governor is. This position is open to anyone with strong mechanical knowledge and skills. We have a senior technician that will provide training hands on training.

Repairing Hydraulic Governors is in-house, bench work. You'll be working in a well-maintained environment, with an airconditioned assembly and test room. This job requires limited field work and may require travel. Travel is typically 1-2 days.

The Knowlege and Responsibility requirements are not expected as of hire date but will be expected after prolonged training.

 

Position Overview

The Hydraulic Mechanical Technician requires application of intensive and diversified knowledge of Hydra-Mechanical equipment service principles, practices and skills. Technical expertise in the operation of mechanical systems related to natural gas and diesel prime mover applications, specifically in speed governing. Working knowledge of internal combustion engines, Steam and Gas Turbine required. Performance of duties requires selection and application of standard techniques, procedures, and technical criteria, along with the ability to work in multi-disciplinary activities. Good verbal and communication skills will be required to effectively communicate with customers, as required.

 

General Responsibilities

  • Interpret and evaluate mechanical governing and actuation system design and associated operational characteristics.
  • Routinely perform detailed performance analysis of mechanical systems.
  • Optimization and developmental feasibility studies on mechanical systems.
  • Remove and install parts; disassemble and assemble components; test and adjust assemblies.
  • Test and troubleshoot units.
  • Working knowledge of measurement and monitoring instrumentation.
  • Use hand tools, air tools, precision measuring tools and instruments.
  • Understands blueprints, wiring diagrams and installation instructions.
  • Provide information and technical expertise to customers and Company’s staff.
  • Communicate with Company’s personnel to obtain and disseminate critical information.
  • Implement goals, work plans, as assigned by management.
  • Responsible to perform work efficiently and in schedule.
  • Responsible for keeping a calibration and maintenance program for all shop instrumentation.
  • Follow and apply Woodward repair policy and requirements.

Qualifications

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED.
  • Trade certification in appropriate mechanical trade and/or equivalent experience in auto mechanic, transmission or engines.
  • Strong mechanical knowledge and skills.
  • Knowledge of basic engine and turbine controls.
  • Knowledge of basic power generation controls.
  • Ability to translate technical information into basic understanding, and the ability to communicate effectively and tactfully with a diversity of people at an individual and team level.
  • Basic computer skills in Microsoft Office.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, and able to obtain passport and TWIC Card within 6 months of hiring.
  • Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Must have a positive attitude and work well with others.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with co-workers, supervisors, vendors and clients.
  • Strong desire for continued growth and learning.

 

Working Conditions

  • Some travel will be required for field installation, calibration and on-site troubleshooting.
  • Should be able to work under pressure to meet deadlines (maintaining quality, accuracy and thoroughness).
  • Should be able to lift items independently up to 70 pounds.
  • Should be able to work in a service shop environment, standing for extended periods of time, with moderate noise levels.
  • Will report to Local Manager and the Corporate Service Director.

 

Work Hours

  • Monday to Friday 8am – 5pm or 7am - 4pm (One or the other). One hour lunch between 12pm - 1pm.
