Salary: $20 - $25 per hour (Full-Time, 40 hours per week)

The Carolina Museum of the Marine is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Associate Curator to join our curatorial team. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the preservation and presentation of Carolina Marine Corps history, ensuring the museum’s collection is carefully managed and exhibited in alignment with professional standards.

About Us

The Carolina Museum of the Marine is a world-class institution dedicated to honoring the legacy of the Carolina Marines and Sailors. Located in Jacksonville, NC, the museum is currently under development and will open its doors in 2026. Our mission is to preserve and share the history, heritage, and contributions of Marines and Sailors who have served in and through the Carolinas.

Position Overview

The Associate Curator plays a key role in collection management, research, and exhibition development. The selected candidate will be responsible for cataloging artifacts, maintaining the museum’s collection database, conducting research, and assisting in exhibition planning and preservation. This position requires a combination of physical labor, teamwork, and strong computer/database management skills.

Key Responsibilities

Ensure compliance with museum industry standards for collection management.
Maintain accurate documentation, including acquisition records, provenance, inventory, and preservation reports.
Oversee and update the museum’s collection database (PastPerfect 5 preferred).
Conduct annual inventory audits and generate reports.
Coordinate internal and external exhibitions, ensuring loaned objects are displayed for no longer than six months.
Research and verify the provenance, historical accuracy, and authenticity of artifacts, photographs, and archival materials.
Assist in the development of exhibition content, including text panels, imagery, artifact labels, and educational materials.
Monitor the location and condition of stored and displayed objects.

What We’re Looking For

Experience in museum collection management or a related field preferred.
Degree in Museum Studies, History, or a related field preferred.
Service in or knowledge of the United States Marine Corps is strongly preferred.
Proficiency in Collections Management software (PastPerfect 5 or similar) is a plus.

✔ Team player with excellent communication and collaboration skills.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

Combination of office and collection storage work.
Requires lifting medium-weight objects, climbing ladders, and standing for extended periods.
Hands-on involvement in artifact handling, exhibition setup, and collection management.
