BetterEd Solutions is seeking a dynamic, committed, and culturally competent Dean of Students and Culture for one of its school partners. The Dean of Students and Culture will lead the development of a peaceful, orderly, and respectful school environment rooted in the school’s values and culturally responsive practices.

This individual will work in close collaboration with the school’s leadership team, teachers, and families to promote positive student behavior, uphold school-wide routines and rituals, manage proactive interventions, and build systems for student support that reflect the grace and courtesy central to the school’s philosophy.

The Dean of Students and Culture is a member of the Leadership Team and will also manage student leadership programs, attendance, conflict resolution systems, restorative practices, and key student-facing initiatives. This is a 12-month position, with typical working hours of Monday-Friday, 7:45 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., with some evening and weekend events as needed.

Essential Functions & Accountabilities:

  • Lead and model school-wide implementation of school-based expectations.
  • Design and implement school-wide routines, rituals, and behavior management systems that promote peace, responsibility, and respect.
  • Oversee daily student culture systems, including morning arrival, lunch, recess, transitions, and dismissal.
  • Manage and maintain all student discipline systems, including Tier I–III interventions, parent communication, documentation, and follow-up.
  • Implement restorative justice, conflict resolution, and peace circle protocols aligned to the school’s framework.
  • Support classroom teachers with behavioral coaching, data-driven problem-solving, and culturally responsive classroom management strategies.
  • Coordinate with Special Education and Mental Health teams to support students with behavior plans, crisis management, and wraparound services.
  • Serve as the school-wide attendance lead, partnering with families, support teams, and the front office to ensure high student attendance and engagement.
  • Partner with leadership to create and facilitate ongoing professional development around classroom culture, de-escalation, and inclusive practices.
  • Manage and grow student leadership programs and student-led events (e.g., peer mediators, culture assemblies, community meetings).
  • Oversee extracurricular student programs.
  • Ensure a positive family-school partnership through effective communication, restorative conferences, and ongoing relationship-building with families.
  • Collaborate with school leaders to monitor and analyze school culture data to inform decisions and improve student experience.
  • Serve as a core member of the school's leadership team, contributing to school-wide decisions, school improvement planning, and professional learning.
  • Uphold the vision, mission, and core values of the school.

Required Competencies and Qualifications:

  • Deep alignment with the school’s principles and culturally responsive practices
  • Proven track record of building strong relationships with students, staff, and families
  • Expertise in student culture systems, behavior interventions, and restorative practices
  • Ability to coach educators in classroom management and social-emotional learning
  • Strong leadership presence with excellent organization, communication, and follow-through
  • A love of children, self-awareness, flexibility, and a sense of humor

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in Education, Counseling, or related field strongly preferred
  • Minimum 3 - 5 years of experience in urban education, with at least 2 years in a leadership, dean, or student support role
  • Experience in restorative justice, SEL, or culturally responsive practice preferred
  • Experience working in public or public charter schools preferred
  • DC Teacher certification or eligibility preferred
