Job Description

We are looking for a reliable and detail-oriented Furnace Heat Treat Operator to join our team. This role is critical to ensuring that thermal processes, including furnace operation and quenching, are carried out in strict accordance with work instructions and quality standards. Summary: This position works under the direction of the Furnace Manager to perform operations on a variety of assigned jobs, alone, or as part of a team or as a supervisor in an assigned area. Ensures that any assigned job conforms to the specifications and instructions indicated on the shop traveler. Verifies that the work performed is consistent and that it meets or exceeds the quality standards. Assumes other activities and responsibilities when necessary.

 

Essential Functions:

Thermal Processing Operations

· Set furnace temperatures and monitor heat-up and soak times per work order instructions.

· Load and unload materials based on type, quantity, and handling requirements.

· Optimize furnace loading for efficiency while maintaining strict part traceability.

· Determine end-of-cycle times, shut down cycles, and safely remove processed parts.

· Perform quenching operations according to specifications.

Furnace Operation and Monitoring

· Control and adjust furnace settings to maintain proper temperatures.

· Monitor thermal cycles to ensure adherence to process parameters.

· Identify and resolve minor furnace operation issues.

Quality Assurance & Inspection

· Inspect finished parts to verify conformance to quality standards.

· Report any non-conformances, including temperature deviations or time variances, immediately to the Quality department.

Safety and Maintenance

· Follow all safety protocols and operating procedures.

· Perform minor preventive maintenance tasks on furnaces and related equipment.

· Maintain a clean and organized work area to promote safety and efficiency.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

· Basic math skills.

· Ability to handle a fast-paced environment.

· Ability to multi-task and prioritize.

· Detail oriented.

· Overall good judgement skills and common sense.

· Ability to speak, read and write English.

· Be alert, attentive, and consistently on time.

Supervisory Responsibilities: An operator may be required to supervise another operator based on departmental need, as determined by the Furnace Manager.

 

Working Conditions:

1. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds assisted or unassisted.

2. Extensive walking and standing.

3. Multiple and variable shift schedules.

4. Shop atmosphere consisting of: chemicals, sharp objects, hot surfaces, and fluctuating temperatures.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Ability to read and interpret work orders, process sheets, and technical documents.
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and safety awareness.
  • Capable of lifting heavy objects, standing for long periods, and working in a high-temperature environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with heat treatment in aerospace, or metal manufacturing.
  • Experience in thermal processing, heat treatment, or furnace operation preferred.
  • Familiarity with ISO 9001 or AS9100 quality standards and AMS 2750.
  • Basic troubleshooting and mechanical skills.
