Summary
The Deckhand has overall responsibility for ensuring the safety of passengers and maintaining the boats.
The Senior Deckhand has overall responsibility for ensuring the safety of passengers and maintaining the boats.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
§ Prepare boat before start up (put up flag, put down tables)
§ Sweep and mop boat floor
§ Brush down seats
§ Wipe smudges off walls
§ Keep bathroom clean (for sunset cruise)
§ Keep galley clean
§ Clean windows with a squeegee
§ Lock all doors that passengers are not allowed to access
§ Ensure no trash or any safety hazards are on boat or dock
§ Greet passengers
§ Assist passengers on boat
§ Ensure passengers including children do not jump on seats
§ Ensure children are properly supervised
§ Proper use of safety equipment
§ Ensure that doors that are required to remain open remain open
§ Ensure proper line handling
§ Basic knowledge of Angel Island surrounding points of interest
§ Watch and protect well being of passengers
Perform other duties as directed, developed or assigned.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Education and/or Experience: None required.
Language Skills: Read, write, and verbally communicate effectively and professionally with passengers, vendors, and other employees. Ability to diplomatically deal with difficult situations and people, while exhibiting a consistent level of professionalism.
Technical Skills: Knowledge of basic line tying a plus. Knowledge of safety procedures required. Basic computer skills a plus.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, report or schedule form.
Other Skills & Abilities: Able to work with little or no supervision. Self motivated. CPR and First Aid Training required.
Availability: Must be available to work weekends and holidays.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Frequent or occasional need to perform the following physical activities: reaching, bending, pushing, pulling, twisting, lifting, and climbing. Have frequent need to perform standing and walking activities related to inspecting boats.
- Constant need to perform the following physical activities: grasping, turning, finger dexterity, jumping down 4 to 5 feet and throwing.
- Occasional need to stand for long periods of time.
- Lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs. frequently and 75 - 100 lbs. occasionally.
- Vision requirements: constant need to view small print. Frequent need to see small details and things clearly beyond arms’ reach.
- Hearing requirements: constant need to speak on telephone and/or two-way radio, respond to general public and converse with staff and public. Ability to hear fire alarms and emergency equipment.
