In 1989, Key Power was acquired by the Detroit Diesel Corporation to create Florida Detroit Diesel-Allison, Inc. FDDA’s first expansion was to open what is now our Fort Pierce branch.
Meanwhile, Western Diesel Services, Inc. of St. Louis, Missouri, purchased the operations of General Motors in Jacksonville, Florida, creating Coastal Power Products, with branches in Jacksonville, Tampa, Sanford, and Ocala. Coastal Power Products remained in operation from 1971 to 1992.
In 1992, Detroit Diesel Corporation purchased Coastal Power Products, and it became Florida Detroit Diesel-Allison North. In 1995 and 1996 the Fort Lauderdale and Orlando branches were constructed and then opened. The state-of-the-art operation in Fort Lauderdale offers complete sales, service, parts, and training for both Volvo Penta and mtu products. The Orlando facility features 20 service bays.
In 1997, these two Detroit Diesel distributorships merged to form a single company with a franchised territory of nine branches covering the state of Florida.
In 2000, DaimlerChrysler purchased Detroit Diesel Corporation, creating the world’s largest medium- and heavy-duty engine manufacturer in the world.
Thirteen years later, on December 16, 2013, Stewart & Stevenson LLC acquired Florida Detroit Diesel-Allison from Detroit Diesel Corporation.
In 2014, FDDA was appointed as an authorized power center for Volvo Penta, as announced in Maritime Executive on December 5, 2014. As a result, FDDA provides parts and service support for Volvo Penta marine and industrial products from its locations and is responsible for direct engine sales throughout Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and The Bahamas.
On September 1, 2015, FDDA acquired Palm Beach Power and made it our tenth branch. This acquisition has facilitated our growth and enabled FDDA to better serve customers in West Palm Beach, the third largest county in Florida.
In 2016, the Panama City branch was awarded Allison Gold Status as the top branch of all of Allison’s 59 distributor locations for the fifth consecutive year. The honor was based on Panama City having the highest customer service or PRP score. The Panama City branch was once again recognized as a top branch for Allison Transmission in 2019.
