Job Description

Job Title:
Field Operations Manager – Hands-On Construction Leader

Location:
Portland, Maine

Company Overview:
We are a high-end residential design-build firm known for delivering beautifully crafted homes and renovations throughout coastal Maine. Our team takes pride in blending timeless craftsmanship with modern efficiency, and we’re looking for a skilled, field-based leader to join our crew.

Position Overview:
This is not an office job. We’re looking for a seasoned construction professional who is just as comfortable swinging a hammer as leading a crew. As Field Operations Manager, you’ll work side-by-side with our carpentry team in the field, providing direct oversight, coordination, and mentorship. You'll be responsible for managing daily operations on site, coordinating with subcontractors, and ensuring our projects are built to the highest standards.

Your role is a balance of leadership and craftsmanship—and you’ll be expected to roll up your sleeves, lead by example, and help develop the skills and confidence of our crew members.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage daily field operations across multiple residential job sites

  • Work alongside our carpentry crew and subcontractors to keep projects on track

  • Provide hands-on mentorship and training to carpenters, helping them grow in skill and confidence

  • Ensure all work meets our quality standards, safety protocols, and timelines

  • Coordinate schedules, material deliveries, and subcontractor work (electrical, plumbing, HVAC, etc.)

  • Troubleshoot construction challenges in real time

  • Maintain clear communication with clients, designers, and office-based project management

Required Experience & Qualifications:

  • 7–10+ years of hands-on residential construction experience

  • Skilled in framing, drywall, trim work, cabinetry, painting, and finish carpentry

  • Solid understanding of mechanical systems (electrical, plumbing, HVAC)

  • Strong leadership and mentoring skills, especially with carpenters at various experience levels

  • Comfortable interpreting construction drawings and specifications

  • Self-motivated and organized with high attention to detail

  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation

Preferred:

  • Previous experience as a Lead Carpenter, Site Supervisor, or Working Foreman

  • OSHA certification or similar jobsite safety credentials

  • Basic tech proficiency (email, text updates, jobsite apps like Procore or Construction Suite)

What We Offer:

  • Competitive pay, based on experience

  • Consistent, year-round work

  • A collaborative, respectful team culture

  • Opportunities to grow into senior leadership within the company

Company Description
Too many workplaces in the construction industry suffer from poor management and culture. We’re building the company that we always wanted to work at, with positive teamwork and a truly supportive back office. We value each team member, and believe that by supporting you to be happy, grow your skills, and do your best work, everybody wins.
