Glacier Peak Institute Outdoor Nature & Recreation Instructor

This AmeriCorps national service position will serve in person in Darrington, WA. The anticipated term of service is January 2025 – July 2025. The Outdoor Nature & Recreation Instructor position serves to provide environmental education and recreation programming through in-school and after-school programs for elementary and middle school students. Due to insurance requirements, members must have a valid drivers license and be at least 21 years old.

This position is a good fit for people who -

  • Like working as a part of a team and working outdoors
  • Enjoy interacting with elementary and middle school students
  • Are interested in working in education, environmental education, outdoor recreation, residential/day camps or STEM careers.
  • Have experience working with children in a variety of environments and outdoor recreation skills/experience in activities such as hiking, backpacking, canoe/kayaking, rafting, outdoor survival, foraging and more!

What you'll be doing -

  • Design and deliver Forest School Programs for elementary and middle school students
  • Develop and lead outdoor STEM, restoration, recreation, restoration and stewardship activities for in-school, after-school and summer programs
  • Collaborate with partner organizations on program design and implementation to provide increased access to the outdoors for strategically underserved communities
  • Recruit, train and lead volunteers
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Monthly stipend of $1,780.
  • Valuable experience in environmental education, outdoor recreation and working with children of various ages in multiple different environments.
  • An education award of $3,697.50 upon completion of the service term.
  • Wilderness First Responder certification and First Aid/CPR certifications

  • Student loan support including forbearance and interest accrual payment on qualifying loans and payment of interest on qualifying student loans that accrued during the service term (paid after successful completion of service term).
  • Serving in a full-time AmeriCorps position qualifies as "employment" towards the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program.
