Position Overview:

Under the direction and supervision of the Chief Academic Officer, the Academic Director of Humanities directs his/her department’s programs at the 9 - 12 level and provides leadership in the ongoing development and improvement of curriculum; assists in the planning, organization, support and evaluation of the curricular and assessment programs of the school.

Key Responsibilities
  • Refine a rigorous Humanities program that delivers excellent results and develops highly engaging, academically rigorous lessons aligned with Common Core standards, school curriculum, and progressive pedagogical philosophy.

  • Model outstanding instruction for teachers to demonstrate best practices in lesson delivery.

  • Supervise and support the development of course guides, teacher guides, courses of study, and other instructional materials.

  • Lead and participate in ongoing professional development, including facilitating co-planning sessions and professional learning experiences for all educators.

  • Regularly observe lessons and provide targeted coaching and feedback to teachers.

  • Utilize formal and informal assessment data to drive instructional practices, ensuring student mastery of standards and supporting teacher development.

  • Lead and participate in data meetings and deep dives that align with schoolwide goals and priorities.

  • Ensure teachers are effectively using assessment data to drive instruction through regular and meaningful debriefs that result in instructional improvement.

  • Collaborate in curriculum development and adapt plans based on student data.

  • Work closely with the intervention team to adapt curriculum, provide remediation, and utilize co-teaching models to scaffold learning for all students, including special populations and English language learners.

  • Promote positive culture and teamwork within the Humanities department and proactively lead interdepartmental collaboration.

  • Build a warm, inclusive environment that emphasizes restorative practices and authentic relationships with students.

  • Actively engage families through consistent communication, proactive partnership, and support of IEP, 504, and eligibility meeting processes.

  • Demonstrate urgency and commitment to ensuring a high-quality, differentiated learning experience for all students.

Qualifications
  • Minimum of five years of teaching experience in an urban high school setting (preferred).

  • Five or more years of successful secondary-level teaching experience.

  • Demonstrated experience in curriculum development and departmental organization.

  • Deep subject area fluency in Humanities disciplines.

  • Experience managing and implementing curricular and instructional programs at the secondary level (desired).

  • Experience conducting classroom observations and providing targeted feedback (desired).

  • Experience designing and delivering professional development for educators (desired).

  • Experience providing district-level support for school improvement and organizational growth (desired).

  • Master’s degree (M.A. or M.S.) required.

  • Valid New York State teacher certification.

  • Valid New York State School Building Leader (SBL) or comparable certification.
