Traffic Control Flagger Job Description

Overall Job Description: The Traffic Control Flagger is responsible for being the front line for traffic safety and prioritizing team member, pedestrian, motorist and work zone safety. They are responsible for supporting their designated field crew through setup, maintenance, and breakdown of safe work areas with proper equipment (Stands, signs, cones, etc) as well as taking ownership for and promoting crew and individual jobsite safe behaviors and AOS core values. The Traffic Control Flagger is directly responsible for providing and keeping up with safety protocols for our team members and customers in order to keep traffic moving safely and efficiently past the work zones. Key responsibilities include the safe execution of traffic control operations while exceeding expectations for quality, productivity and customer satisfaction. Traffic Control Flaggers demonstrate an eagerness to learn and share knowledge, grow in their profession, act through integrity and respect, and contribute to collaborative team environments.

Position Details

  • The main office is located at 1224 Two Notch Rd, Lexington, SC 29073 **Depending on job needs and availability, you may be required to work out of town multiple weeks throughout the year. Transportation, housing and meals are provided**
  • Full-Time Positions only, M-F, 40+ hour weeks
  • Pay range starting at $16.00/hour with no experience
  • Merit-based raises in first 3 months
  • $1,500.00 Sign-on bonus paid in installments based on merit throughout first year

Essential Duties

  • Ability to work outdoors in hot and cold conditions year-round 10+ hours per day
  • Ability to repetitively kneel, bend and lift up to 50 pounds utilizing safe lifting techniques
  • AOS is a drug and alcohol-free workplace. Successful candidates will be required to pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check

Traffic Control Flagger Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates and promotes safe behaviors, wears required PPE at all times and follows the AOS Position Safety Guidelines provided and reviewed at orientation and throughout training
  • Adheres to and promotes traffic control safety protocols for all team members and customers onsite, laid out by the crew lead/foreman/superintendent and explained in training as well as for surrounding pedestrians and motorists
  • Seeks to support consistent and clear communication with fellow traffic control team members, and members of the designated field crew
  • Controls the traffic flow with stop/slow paddles
  • Sets up and prepares a safe work zone for the workday with proper equipment (stands, signs, cones, etc)
  • Supports end of day activities such as break down of equipment and prepares the work zone in an organized manner in anticipation for the next workday, or the next crew – including jobsite and AOS materials yard
  • Demonstrates personal accountability for individual and team safe behaviors, quality of work, collaboration and productivity
  • Arrives on time and notifies supervisor in advance of personal time off
  • Supports daily equipment checks for their crew through direct ownership of necessary tasks or provides assistance as needed

Traffic Control Flagger Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrates strong knowledge on flagging and basic SC traffic control and work zone safety (training provided)
  • Seeks and accepts feedback on performance and contributes to a communicative environment
  • Demonstrates a strong problem-solving “How can we” attitude and a willingness to learn team and company processes
  • Demonstrates consistent effort
  • Ability to work self-directed
  • Ability to communicate and report effectively with crew/supervisor

Education, Training and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid state issued Driver’s License
  • Resume and/or 1 letter of recommendation preferred
  • Fluency in English; Spanish a plus
  • Certifications in construction (ex: OSHA 10, Flagger, Work Zone Safety) a plus
  • First Aid/CPR certification a plus
