Job Title: Customer Service Representative – Utility Billing

Pay rate: $17.00 

Position Overview

Under direct supervision of the Customer Relations Supervisor, the Customer Service Representative provides front-line customer service for utility customers. This role handles account inquiries, processes new service requests, resolves complaints, and manages billing-related transactions. The position also performs clerical duties related to account maintenance and payment processing, ensuring accurate and timely service delivery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Establish new customer accounts and process deposits using ID verification through Equifax.

  • Assist customers with service transfers, new service connections, disconnections, demolitions, and billing questions.

  • Perform radio/dispatch duties, including checking abnormal meter readings, pulling meters, blinding meters, and ordering cut-offs.

  • Calculate billing adjustments and update customer accounts to correct errors.

  • Process and post payments on customer accounts via Nexus; research and respond to payment-related inquiries.

  • Coordinate new water meter installations and set up corresponding customer accounts.

  • Issue work orders for meter re-reads, re-checks, service reconnections, and other related tasks in the computer system.

  • Receive, sort, and process daily utility payment mail; post payments accurately and prepare bank deposits.

  • File affidavits for leak adjustments and assist customers in completing necessary forms.

  • Help customers set up and manage payment schedules and arrangements.

  • Maintain organized filing systems and indexes in both alphabetical and numerical formats.

  • Perform daily cash balancing and reconciliation of all transactions.

  • Provide courteous and professional customer support to resolve inquiries and direct customers appropriately.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience:

  • Six (6) months of experience performing varied clerical duties or utilizing a computer-based billing system in a customer service/relations role.

OR

Education Alternative:

  • Completion of classes in a career/technical education program or an Associate’s (or higher-level) degree program in office administration, business, billing, or a related clerical area. (Proof of education is required.)

Skills & Abilities

  • Strong customer service and communication skills.

  • Ability to research and resolve billing issues accurately.

  • Proficiency with computer-based systems and data entry.

  • Attention to detail and commitment to maintaining accurate records.

  • Ability to perform daily accounting and reconcile transactions.

  • Ability to multitask and work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
